Song of the Soil by Chhuden Kabimo

A gripping, beautifully written English novel rooted in the Himalayan foothills — Song of the Soil by Chhuden Kabimo brings alive the turbulent story of the Gorkhaland revolution of the late 1980s with extraordinary clarity, humanity, and moral depth. A novel that asks the most vital question of any revolution: Who ultimately wins — and who loses?

About the Book

  • Author: Chhuden Kabimo
  • Language: English
  • Genre: Literary Fiction / Historical Fiction
  • Setting: Kalimpong, Himalayan foothills — late 1980s Gorkhaland movement

The Story

On a day of earthquake and rain, a young man receives devastating news: Ripden, his childhood friend, has been swept away by a landslide. He makes his way back to Malbung, the village of his birth, and memories come rushing back — of growing up together, harsh schoolteachers, backyard fights, and the day they ran away to Lolay to find Ripden’s father, who had vanished years earlier in the revolution.

There they meet Nasim, a man who spends his days breaking rocks by the riverside. Nasim narrates an extraordinary tale from his youth: of child soldiers building pipe guns and homemade bombs; fighting pitched battles with police; training in jungle camps; witnessing a massacre in the town square; and suffering a final, unforgivable betrayal.
